Deciding whether to share information about a disability with an employer is rarely straightforward, and for many students who are members of the disability community it remains a significant source of uncertainty. This uncertainty can hold them back from asking for the adjustments they need to perform at their best during recruitment, and in some cases may impact their success.

Grounded in research* on ‘Openness’, this session will explore the complexities surrounding disclosure. It will support participants to better understand students’ concerns, consider how these can be addressed, and build confidence in guiding students to make informed decisions about if, when, and how to share information with employers.

During this interactive workshop, we will:

  • Examine why employers collect information about disability and how it is used

  • Consider the factors that influence students’ decisions not to disclose

  • Weigh up the potential advantages of being open, alongside the risks of non-disclosure

  • Strengthen your confidence in supporting students to navigate disclosure decisions

  • Share practical strategies and tools to help students prepare for conversations with employers

The session will be led by Helen Cooke CBE, CEO and Founder of MyPlus, and will include opportunities for discussion, questions, and shared learning. Alongside practical guidance for day-to-day student support, Helen will be joined by representatives from JPMorganChase, who will offer their perspectives and respond to questions from attendees.
