Empowering identity: Encouraging self-disclosure in recruitment & the workplace

MyPlus Employers' Club 'Empowering identity' virtual workshop 4th November

Tuesday 4th November; 9.30am to 10.45am
Virtual Workshop

With one in three people impacted by disability, creating a truly inclusive workplace culture is essential for all organizations. An environment that embraces diversity and fosters openness allows ALL employees to feel valued and supported, which, in turn, drives engagement, performance, and overall business success. However, many employers find it challenging to encourage self-id among both current and prospective employees with disabilities and / or health conditions.

For individuals with disabilities, the decision to disclose (not a helpful phrase) their condition can be daunting. Concerns about potential negative judgments, being seen as a ‘hassle,’ or being treated differently often lead to reluctance to share. Yet, as employers, understanding an individual’s needs is key to providing the right support—from the recruitment process through to their ongoing career journey.

This workshop will help delegates understand the barriers that prevent individuals from being open about their disabilities. Participants will gain practical insights into fostering an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their needs and accessing support without fear of judgement or stigma.

Additionally, the session will cover best practices for inclusive recruitment. While no organization intentionally sets up barriers, it’s vital to assess your recruitment process through a disability-inclusive lens, ensuring every candidate has an equal opportunity to succeed. We’ll guide you through each stage of recruitment, encouraging you to ask: Are we enabling applicants to request the support they require.

To bring these concepts to life, we’ll be joined by individuals with lived experience who will share their perspectives on openness and offer insights on how employers can create a welcoming, supportive culture.

India-Rose May

India is a Corporate Associate at Fladgate LLP, specialising in venture capital, corporate reorganisations and private M&A. She trained at Baker McKenzie and qualified into their M&A team, before moving to Fladgate in October 2022.

India was diagnosed with hearing loss shortly after she started work in 2019, although it is believed that it is a congenital condition which she has had since birth. She now wears hearing aids (when she remembers) and manages her disability by informing her colleagues and making small changes to her everyday habits at work.

India’s relationship with MyPlus began when she was at Baker McKenzie and she has since become passionate about increasing accessibility for disabled employees and, most importantly, encouraging open conversations about disability in the workplace.

Will More

Will is a workplace inclusion advocate whose journey began with a personal turning point. During his industrial placement at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Will experienced a sudden deterioration in his mental health and was later diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. On returning to work, he chose to speak openly about his experience, challenging stigma and misconceptions around OCD and mental health in professional environments.

Since then, Will has spent time working with small businesses at Mind in Somerset, thrived in a high-growth startup environment, and led teams focused on inclusive workplace practices. Today, he works at Carers UK, partnering with major corporations and government departments to support employees balancing work with caring responsibilities. Through this range of experience Will is able to highlight how workplace cultures can help individuals authentically bring their whole self to work, and ultimately drive engagement and performance.
