Inclusive Recruitment

Opening up recruitment processes to enable more people with disabilities to apply and be successful

People are an organisation’s most valuable asset and attracting and recruiting the very best talent is crucial to your organisation’s success. To recruit the very best talent, you have to be inclusive of everyone; and that includes those who have a disability.

With 1 in 5 of the working age population having a disability, being inclusive of this talent pool in your recruitment practices must become the norm, or business as usual, if you are serious about recruiting the best talent. Long gone are the days of running schemes, initiatives, programmes or working with a charity to bring in one or two people with a disability per year; not only are these expensive and time consuming they are also unsustainable and won’t make any real different to your talent pool.

No organisation intentionally has barriers in its recruitment process however it is crucial to objectively audit your end to end process through a disability lens to ensure that no barriers exist. At each stage of the process, you need to be asking yourself the question: Are we doing enough to create a level playing field?

It is not sufficient to think that you don’t need to do anything to be inclusive and that people with disabilities will automatically apply to you. If you want to actively engage with this talent pool you need to be proactive in telling them that they are wanted, and you need to market yourselves as employers of choice.
