The power of different perspectives: Neurodiversity in the workplace

Thursday 15th June; 9.30am to 11.00am

Hosted by Herbert Smith Freehills, Central London

Neurodiversity is an umbrella term for a set of hidden disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It is increasingly being recognised that individuals with a neurodiverse condition bring different perspectives and skills to the workplace which, in turn, can make a positive difference to the organisation.

In the last few years there has been a substantial increase in the number of adults, and particularly women, being diagnosed with neurodivergent conditions. In addition, an increasing number of neurodiverse graduates are entering the job market. It is therefore crucial that employers build their understanding about this subject if you are to leverage the unique skills and abilities that these individuals have. You need to understand the strengths of neurodiversity, how your organisation can attract neurodiverse talent and how to support employees once they have joined your workforce.

MyPlus are delighted to be joined by a number of neurodiversity experts who will provide a clear and practical understanding of neurodiversity including the benefits of a neurodiverse workforce, how to ensure that recruitment practices are inclusive and supportive, and how to provide relevant support in the workplace itself.

Agenda:

  • Understanding ‘Neurodiversity’

    • Autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD

  • Inclusive recruitment and best management practice

  • Providing support in the workplace

  • Insights and first had experience

This workshop will be invaluable for those wishing to understand more about neurodiversity, and how to support neurodiverse individuals both during the recruitment process and in the workplace.

Marianna Corbett

Marianna is an Executive Director and Head of Regulatory Control in the Front Office for Global Markets and Investment Banking at Nomura International plc.

Marianna began her career in Equities via the graduate scheme with Merrill Lynch in 2000, and joined Nomura in 2005, working in various Equities Business Management/COO roles for 11 years before moving into Front Office Supervision and her current role in regulatory control.

Marianna was identified as autistic with ADHD, DCD (dyspraxia), OCD traits, and sensory processing differences at the age of 44 in 2021, following years of struggling with mental health challenges, anxiety, and disordered eating.  Provided with the opportunity to finally understand her neurodivergent brain, its strengths, and the challenges it is presented with in the wrong environments, Marianna advocates for moving away from the ‘deficit’ model of neurodivergence by educating others on the importance of the right environment and accommodations that are needed for neurodivergent individuals to thrive rather than just survive in schools and the workplace.
