Making workplaces work, MyPlus disability event for employers on 24th March 2022 at 10am

Thursday 24th March; 10am to 11.15am

Virtual Breakfast Seminar

All of us need to be managed and supported in the workplace in order that we can work effectively and fulfil our potential. And, at times, some of us may need additional support for whatever reason. However, the support required by an individual with a disability or health condition can be very different to what those without a disability require, and it can be difficult to envisage what this looks like. We talk about ‘reasonable adjustments’ but what is reasonable, what types of adjustments should we be providing, how do we source them and how do they work in practice?

To shed light on these questions we will be joined by a number of individuals who will talk about their personal experiences of disability, and how they manage this in the workplace. There will be the opportunity to learn about the types of support and adjustments that can be provided as well as about the different approaches that various organisations take to disability and how they support their disabled employees.

There will be plenty of time to engage in conversations with our speakers, to ask questions, and to learn more about subjects that are unfamiliar to us. This Breakfast Seminar will build your knowledge to have a better understanding of certain disabilities, of required adjustments and how these work in practice, as well as other considerations in the workplace.

Richard’s professional career saw him spend over 25 years working for Mars Wrigley, where he worked in a wide range of roles across the supply chain, including business planning, sales and latterly procurement where he was global cocoa price risk director, part of the team responsible for sourcing cocoa for all the Mars factories across the world. This entailed global travel including Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America.

Richard broke his neck in a skiing accident in 2001 meaning he is now a full-time wheelchair user, so has first-hand experience of working with his employer to get the necessary support to help adapt from being able bodied and enable him to continue to have a fulfilling and successful career with a disability.

Headshot of Adam Dempsey

Adam Dempsey

Adam is an Assistant Manager (Associate) at KPMG Law, sitting in the Commercial, Technology & Data practice as a commercial solicitor. Adam joined KPMG Law in 2020, having previously trained at Baker McKenzie. He has also spent time on secondment to the commercial operations legal team at Amazon.

Adam has suffered from various mental health issues for the past decade through school, university, and into his career as a commercial solicitor that continue to be a pressure in his day-to-day life. Whilst a junior lawyer, he has had to undergo various mental health treatments, take periods of time off work, and continues to seek treatment on an intermittent basis. This has forced a level of transparency and honesty that previously had not been widely discussed in the legal profession. In his current role, Adam has adopted a flexible way of working and strives to be an example of the benefits that open conversations and allyship can bring.

Adam has a keen interest being an advocate and role model for peers and superiors alike to foster an inclusive and diverse support network. He has worked to speak out, mentor, and coach others and believes in the importance of improving the accessibility of the profession to all.

John was diagnosed with autism as an adult: an epiphany that explained how he’d thrived in some situations but struggled in others – particularly regarding his environment, with noise, and in social situations. John is employee lead for Enabled, DLA Piper’s disability network.
