MyPlus Consulting was founded by Helen Cooke, a HR professional, disability consultant, trainer and speaker.
Helen’s unique approach stems largely from her wide ranging experience, drawing on her commercial background, her HR expertise, as well as first-hand experience of disability.
Helen uses a wheelchair as a result of a childhood spinal injury and she uses her personal experiences to bring the subject alive and to help people to really understand the key issues.
Helen started her career as a graduate trainee with Marks and Spencer. After spending 3 ½ years as a commercial manager Helen joined Mars Inc where, after a brief stint in the sales division, she moved into HR, spending the next three years working as an HR Business Partner.
Helen then moved into the resourcing team. Here she was responsible for internal and external recruitment as well as establishing graduate management programmes for the finance, sales and marketing divisions.
In addition to her own experiences of disability, Helen has worked extensively with other disabled individuals.
The majority of this experience comes from her involvement with The Back Up Trust, an organisation which supports individuals after spinal cord injury. Helen developed and delivers the Back Up to Work course as well as acting as a mentor for the Back Up mentoring programme.
In 2001, Helen took a sabbatical from Mars which she spent volunteering for the Whistler Adaptive Sports Programme. This aims to get disabled individuals skiing, regardless of their impairment. A keen skier herself, Helen drew on her own love of the sport to inspire others to have a go.
